About Bougie Boogie

Bougie Boogie Line Dancing was launched on May 3, 2023, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama by Ashley R. Wheat.  Throughout her life, Ashley had always been a wallflower.  As a child, she suffered from severe asthma and was discouraged from participating in physical activity.  Since her early 20s, Ashley suffered from debilitating fibroids.  Not only did they cause chronic physical pain, but also depleted her energy levels.  Dancing was the furthest thing from her mind.  After trying natural remedies for years, her symptoms got so bad that she underwent surgery on March 6, 2020 – just two weeks prior to the Covid-19 shutdown.

Like many others, the pandemic was a major shifting point in Ashley’s life.  First, instead of rushing back to work as planned, she was forced to stay home and fully recover from surgery, which improved her quality of life in ways she couldn’t have imagined.  Furthermore, witnessing the devastation the pandemic caused, Ashley felt compelled to savor her newfound health to live life to the fullest.  She wanted to become more impactful in the community, party, travel, and DANCE!

On November 2, 2021, Ashley got her first real taste of line dancing when she joined a class with D2 Line Dancing, founded by Desi Keith and headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.  For a year and a half, she enjoyed learning new moves, connecting with her classmates, and dancing the night away at parties.  She even had the opportunity to perform live with D2 at the World Games on July 14, 2022.

As much as Ashley had grown to love line dancing, the thought of teaching it had never crossed her mind.  After being asked by several friends to teach them dances they saw her perform at parties, and a friend opening a new event space that would be perfect for line dancing, she stepped out on faith to launch Bougie Boogie Line Dancing.  This initiative is designed to promote physical wellness by getting people moving; encourage a sense of community by dancing as a unit; and increase mental health by exercising memory, and stimulating dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins!
